Navigating the Media Maze

Home >> Jays' Parenting Resource >> Nov. 21, 2011

Do you have a filter yet? That was one of the many questions we asked and addressed yesterday at our Parent Resource Workshop. The topic was "Navigating The Media Maze- Helping Teens Make Wise Media Choices." The discussion centered around some strategies to help our children make good if not better, media choices. It was a great afternoon and i wanted to share a few of the highlights in case you missed it!

With the help of Walt Mueller and his book Youth Culture 101, Walt offers parents 6 guidelines when trying to help teens develop a "filter" for the media and media messages:

  • Guideline 1: Focus on the message and not how it is delivered.
  • Guideline 2: Teach teens how to evaluate everything they see and hear- biblically.
  • Guideline 3: Avoid extremes such as "run for your life!" and "I didnt hear anything bad, did you?"
  • Guideline 4: Examine yourself and your own guidelines that you are modeling for your kids.
  • Guideline 5: Be proactive and listen and watch with them.
  • Guideline 6: Have patience.
