A hardy crew of church leaders just finished the gritty work of personnel reviews and annual budget preparation. This is not easy work. It requires hard questions of the church staff and even harder decisions about spending. The good news is that we have again navigated through a year of economic downturn with our financial promises kept. Our budget is missions-heavy, of course, not to mention the generous staff care you give. Added to this was the much-needed renovation of the building. So far, we are making our way step-by-step through these ministry commitments.
As we learned in the budget process, however, we have little room for error in 2012. While most on the budget committee feel that the downturn of the economy is affecting our contributions, we must also fess up to the need for faithful giving from all of us in the church. We simply cannot function as we plan unless everyone is giving and giving by faith. These offerings are given for the function of this fellowship, but it is God we are following and worshiping as we give. We are called to excel in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in earnestness and in love, but are also called to excel in the grace of giving (2 Corinthians 8:7).
God invites us to a deeper faith through giving, to abandon the notion of security through wealth. For some of us, consistent giving is the next step of faith. For others, raising your giving incrementally month-by-month is the challenge. And for others, it might be time to take God's challenge to tithe (Malachi 3:10). The exact offer goes like this: "Test me in this and see if I will throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have enough room for it." As one who tithes, I can attest to the broad sweep of God's blessing on our home and our faith as we trust Him to provide for us.
Faithful giving hurts a bit, I'll admit, but God offers all of us a new breath of freedom if we turn over our concern for security to Him. Please join me as we move forward together in 2012.
The choir has prepared these past months to celebrate Christ's birth. We'll gather in the sanctuary on Sunday morning for this great piece of music. Please make every effort to see and enjoy the choir's offering of worship.Christmas Eve & Morning
